2007 Safety Test

Successfully completing the Safety Test (100%) is a requirement for rowing – coxswains and rowers alike. Thanks for your cooperation and for your attention to safety!  Deadline: April 30th

Reminder:  Please read the Safety Manual before taking the Safety Test.  You will not be able to answer every question successfully without looking at the Safety Manual.  The test is easy; look up the answer in the Safety Manual.

1. The Club owns Safety Bags that shall go out on the coaches’ launches at each session. Each bag contains:

a. Mobile 911 Phone
b.
Rescue Throw Bag
c.
Fire Extinguisher
d. All of the above

2. All Members (who participate in any Club sanctioned rowing activities) and coaches: Shall ensure that rowing sessions do not commence or continue without a launch. No safety launch, no row! No crew/shell should be on the water with out a safety launch close by.  Does a coach sitting in the coxswain's seat does count as a safety launch?

a. Yes
b. No

3. The ratio of boats per coach should be no more than

a. four, but shall never exceed six boats per coach.
b. three, but shall never exceed four boats per coach.
c. three, but shall never exceed five boats per coach.
d. two, but shall never exceed four boats per coach.

4. The Club maintains CPR-AED certification for our coaches and a select group of active members. There is a defibrillator

a. in the erg room available for use in the case of an emergency.
b. in each launch for use in the case of an emergency.
c. in the boat bay available for use in the case of an emergency.

5. If someone’s health or life is in danger on the water, coaches or anyone shall

a. call Public Safety, using either their own cell phone or the phone in the Safety Bag.
b. call the boathouse, using either their own cell phone or the phone in the Safety Bag.
c. call 911, using either their own cell phone or the 911-phone in the Safety Bag.
d. call the Session Manager, using either their own cell phone or the phone in the Safety Bag.

6. Members and guests may ride in a launch

a. if they are 13 years old or older, who have signed a waiver and with the coach’s permission. Riders shall carry a life preserver.
b. if they are member’s children, who have signed a waiver and with the coach’s permission. Riders shall carry a life preserver.
c. if they are high school age or older, who have signed a waiver and with the coach’s permission. Riders shall carry a life preserver.

7. All boats should remain with the responsible coach/safety launch

a. within 1000 meters so that immediate assistance can be rendered if required
b. at a distance that would allow the coach to render assistance if required within 10 minutes
c. so that the coach can hear calls for help and render immediate assistance if required
d. at an appropriate distance so that they can be supervised/observed and immediate assistance can be rendered if required

8. Club members should only use the ergs and rowing tanks at the Princeton University boathouse

a. during the winter season.
b. during lunch time and after 6:00 PM.
c. when the University is not in session.
d. during supervised rowing sessions.

9. Coaches have the authority to cancel rowing activities

a. at any time if it is deemed that procedures and policies are not being followed or if any unsafe condition exists.
b. at any time if it is deemed that procedures and policies are not being followed and it is confirmed by the Session Manager.
c. at any time that the coxswains and rowers declare with a majority vote that an unsafe condition exists.

10. It is the coxswain’s responsibility that their shell should not leave the dock unless the following equipment is either installed or onboard:

a. Coxswain kit bag.
b. Quick-release shoes with Velcro closure and heel tie-downs.
c. A sound making device (i.e. horn or whistle).
d. All of the above.
