CLRA Donates $20,000 to Princeton University's Boathouse Renewal Campaign

On behalf of CLRA, Stuyve Pell, a club founder and an officer of the Princeton University Rowing Association, presented PURA fund-raising consultant Will Rivinus with a check for $20,000 toward the Boathouse Renewal Campaign at the annual members meeting and holiday party on December 21. The donation, which came from gifts made by CLRA members in the mid-90s for a potential Laker boathouse project, was redirected to the P.U. Boathouse Campaign with the permission of the donors.

Accepting the check, Mr. Rivinus, Princeton Class of '50, said to the CLRA members assembled, "You make a tremendous contribution to the rowing program." Outgoing board president John Ellis said, "It's great that CLRA is able to participate in the project, to say thanks for 15 years of a wonderful relationship."

Architectural drawings of the new boathouse were on display at the meeting and Mr. Rivinus gave a brief "tour" of the new facility, slated to start construction this spring. Viewed from Washington Road, the new complex will look very similar, he said; however from the inside and from the waterfront, many changes and improvements are planned—including new workout and locker rooms, two additional bays and a new tankhouse. The facility will be called the C. Bernard Shea Rowing Center, in honor of a class of '16 rower whose widow, Irene C. Shea of Pittsburgh, Pa., gave $4 million to the project, although the Class of 1887 Boathouse, built in 1913 as a reunion gift, will retain its original name.
