Coxswain Clinic

coxpin.gif (3772 bytes)At CLRA, everyone coxes so we distribute this responsibility fairly. We all know how important a high level of coxing proficiency is both to safety and a productive rowing session. Please help yourself and your club by learning and practicing good coxing skills. A copy of our Coxing Manual is available on the CLRA website. Detailed information is provided by clicking on each category.

On-the-job Coxing Training Begins April 4. To help everyone develop their coxing skills, coach Tom will begin assigning novices to cox, pairing experienced and novice coxswains so they can learn by example in addition to making for smoother rowing sessions. For the month of April please do NOT sign up to cox on easy signup with two EXCEPTIONS: (1) experienced rowers/coxswains may sign up to cox for the Wednesday head race and (2) coxing-only members may sign up to cox online at any time. Tom will assign coxswains based on the signups for that day – and all rowers must be prepared to cox as we rotate through the novice coxswains. Please bring appropriate clothes to every practice so you’re prepared if asked to cox.

Land-Based Coxswain Training on April 17. Resident coxswain expert Jen Whiting will conduct a land-based training session on Sunday, April 17th from 1:30pm to 3pm. Learn what supplies are in the coxswain bag, how to use the cox box, what commands to provide to your crew when moving the boat in and out of the boat house, and what resources are available in our Laker Library. Strongly encouraged for novices and those new to coxing on Lake Carnegie. You can come and learn and then sign up to row at 3pm.

For questions and to sign up, please email Sharon Eaton or call her at (732) 545-9490 (evenings) by Wednesday, April 13th.
